The island

Lesvos is the third biggest island in Greece, after Crete and Evia, and is located in the North Eastern Aegean sea. It has 90,000 residents. It is famous for two products, olive oil and ouzo, and as the birthplace of the female poet Sappho.

The island has a long history and is rich in tradition. This gives an impression of great authenticity. What is more, its nature is unique. The rich flora and fauna makes Lesvos one of the top birding destinations in Europe. Its geographical position and its great variety of landscapes, particularly wetlands, make it an important stop-over for migrating birds passing through the eastern Mediterranean in spring and autumn. For nature lovers, the areas around Belvedere Hotel offer great walking and bicycle trails. The famous olives groves, the mild Mediterranean climate and the charming traditional villages impress all visitors.

On your way around the island, visitors shall discover many sights, from Roman aqueducts to Byzantine monasteries and castles. Walk through Mytilene with the famous mansions or through the narrow streets of Agiasos and Molivos, or admire the petrified forest near Sigri, a national monument since 1985. It is a forest that has been fossilized 15-20 million years ago due to the intense volcanic activity in the area which included coniferous forests and mainly huge sequoias and primitive pine trees. It is one of the rarest natural monuments in the world (the only similar ecosystems today are the coniferous forests in north America), visited by thousands of tourists.

Many other beautiful villages and resorts are found around Lesvos as well as interesting sightseeing from all historical periods. Belvedere Hotel forms a perfect starting point for your holidays. Seize the opportunity of a unique experience!
